While filming Bravetown in Winnipeg, Danny Rodriguez developed a love for poutine and later created National Poutine Day, also opening the first Smoke’s Poutinerie in the U.S. in Berkeley, California. Poutine, a staple in Quebec, consists of fries, cheese curds, and brown gravy, with many variations and a name believed to come from either “pudding” or the Quebec slang for “mess.” The dish was first served in 1957 at L’Idéal restaurant in Warwick, Quebec, when a customer asked for cheese curds on his fries, leading to its creation and eventual popularity.
