Inflation at 2.3% is fine. It’s FOOD. Overall inflation may look steady at 2.3%, but that number hides what’s really hurting — food costs. People aren’t complaining about luxury items; they’re struggling to fill grocery carts. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to purchase life’s necessities. Brandon’s food banks report record demand, with Samaritan House and Helping Hands both serving thousands more due to rising living costs.

Here are five foods that cost more in Canada than in many other countries, with quick comparisons:
Milk (1 litre) — About US $2.33 (~CAD $3.25) in Canada, compared to the average of US $1.74 globally.
Chicken breasts (skinless, boneless) — In Canada these can cost about 49% more than in the U.S.
Cheese (local, 1 kg) — Roughly CAD $15.63 (~US $10.68) in Canada.
Avocados — In the U.S. around US $0.99 each (~CAD $1.35) versus about CAD $1.99 in Canada.
Vegetables (e.g., bell peppers) — Green bell peppers cost about US $0.79 (~CAD $1.07) in the U.S., versus around CAD $2.16 in Canada.

Brandon Foodbank sees record usage. The Brandon Foodbank is busier than ever as more families rely on donations to get by. With a tough winter ahead, demand is expected to climb even higher. (See the CBC interview from the Samaritan House Food Bank Below)
