Emma Bassermann and Zoe Meklensek-Ireland were both about to ride their last wave while boogie boarding on the Barbados coast on Wednesday when they heard a woman in the water crying for help. Belinda Stone told the teens her husband, Robert, was too far out in the ocean and struggling to return to shore. Bassermann, 14, is a competitive swimmer with the Dorval Swim Club in Barbados for Olympic trials training, and Meklensek-Ireland was there because her father, Chuck is the club’s coach. The young girls say they were at the right place at the right time and both of them being good swimmers helped save the couple’s lives. If you ever want to struggle in the water, you want to have a couple of champion swimmers there to save you.
