HAPPY FROZEN FOOD DAY! Almost all foods can be frozen, except for eggs in shells and canned food. Not all foods freeze well, however, including lettuce, cream sauce, and mayonnaise. Raw meats keep better in the freezer than cooked meats, because they have more moisture which is otherwise lost during cooking. Freezing food prevents microorganisms & foodborne illness and food spoilage, although food quality degrades the longer it is frozen. For these many reasons frozen food can be celebrated, and that is what is done today on National Frozen Food Day!

What are the BEST Frozen foods?

It’s also OREO COOKIE DAY! Oreos were created by Nabisco and first sold on March 6, 1912 by grocer S.C. Thuesen in Hoboken, New Jersey. Getting their name for a few different reasons: The Greek word “oreo,” which means beautiful and nice. After starting out as the “Oreo Biscuit,” the cookies’ official name changed to the “Oreo Sandwich” in 1921, to the “Oreo Creme Sandwich” in 1948, and to the “Oreo Chocolate Sandwich” in 1974.  Each year 7.5 billion cookies are purchased. OVER 500 billion Oreos have been sold.

Oreos are a product of the USA, so want to make them at home? Why not. Here’s how you can make CANADIAN Home Made Oreos for you and your family, although I would make them SUPERSIZE!

Daytrips are OUT, but weekend trips are OK. A quick trip across the U.S. border to pick up groceries or clothes may now cost Canadians more due to a 25% surtax imposed by the Canada Border Services Agency in response to U.S. tariffs. This tax applies to commercial & personal items exceeding exemptions, including groceries, cosmetics, clothing, and alcohol. Personal exemptions vary based on time spent out of the country, and travelers must declare all U.S. goods, paying duties or surtaxes upon entry or delivery, with further discussions ongoing between Canada and the U.S. regarding potential tariff exemptions. So for now you’ll pay DUTY for DAILY but keep the weekend exemption according to this report:

Less traffic going south, means airlines are starting to cancel routes. Flair Airlines is the latest company to pull back on some flights south of the border.

Applebee’s is the latest sit-down restaurant to show signs of stressors. It’s no secret the Covid recovery and inflation have hit restaurants hard, with many US based chains filing for bankruptcy and some restructuring. Applebee’s is going to attempt to get back on track by having corporate takeover some of the franchise locations going forward.
